A showreel compresses many clients, materials, and techniques into a craft argument. That makes it useful for judging capability and dangerous as a direct commercial reference.

Evaluate craft by category

Watch for modeling accuracy, material response, lighting, camera control, simulation, typography, compositing, edit rhythm, and sound. One impressive liquid shot does not establish equal strength in character work or technical visualization.

When briefing from a reel, timestamp the capability you mean and explain the business job it must perform. “Make it like this reel” combines incompatible styles and budgets.

The production pain point

Designers are often asked to price a 15-second 3D video from a glossy reference with no scope. Request style frames, asset status, aspect ratios, simulations, delivery resolution, review gates, and revision limits before estimating.
